Ko Murobushi White o Blankness”” – Momozaru (Peach Monkey) of Kumi Machida

Art Top, June 20, 2008, Geijutsu Shimbun Sha

Last January, I was in Marrakech, Morocco. When I went out to Medina Square eating a peach, a monkey entertainer approached me then let me shoulder two monkeys. There was also a snake charmer in the square; while I was distracted by him, the monkey took away my peach. This was the peach monkey of Morocco. This time, upon returning from Brazil, I danced then gasped, Wow, victory, because of the Peach Monkey in Ms. Machidas tableau that I discovered for the first time at the stage checking. This is the curious tension among Kumi Machida, Morocco, and Minoru Yohioka, given by the peach.

Having seen Ms. Machida
s works, I was caught up by the desire to reread Japanese postwar contemporary poems. This time, I remember having that feeling throughout the performance. I think the factors can be found in the large blank spaces of the three tableaus. The poetry of the white of the blankness.

In quick silver, I dance with my entire body painted in metallic silver, so the idea that my silver body matches Ms. Machida
s white of blankness came to mind, but bursting out in small laughter, I put the idea aside and decided to think over it for another day. And then, the blank will come together with Jim Morrisons Alabama Song selected for Bigakkou [School of Aesthetics] 1969, my undetermined, fantastic story telling, and James Chance.
